Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate hard tissue reaction of SLA implant in the rabbit femoral condyle and tibial metaphysis by means of removal torque measurements and histomorphometric analysis. Ten adult New Zealand White rabbits were used in this study. SLA 3.75-mm implants ( Test; Neobiotech Co., Seoul, Korea ) were inserted in one leg and Machined 3.75-mm implants ( Control; Neobiotech Co., Seoul, Korea ) in the other. Altogether 3 implants were inserted per leg: Two in each tibia ( penetrating are cortical layer only ) and one in each femur. A total of 60 implants (SLA implants : 30 ; Machined implants : 30 ) were inserted. After a healing time of 4 and 12 weeks, the peak removal torque values required to shear off the implants were recorded. And the percentage of direct bone-to-implant contact and the percentage of bone area inside the thread were measured by Kappa Image Base-metreo. The Student¡¯s t-test was undertaken for statistical analysis (p<0.05). The results were as follows ; 1) The removal torque value had no statistical difference between two groups. (p>0.05). 2) SLA implant showed a significantly greater percentage of bone-to-implant contact compared to the machined implant.(p<0.05). 3) The percentage of bone area inside the thread had no statistical difference between two groups (p>0.05). The present study showed that the SLA implant surface had significantly higher bone-to-implant contact, possibly SLA implant surface elicited a significantly stronger bone reaction than machined implant surface.
